Forgery, Theft, Dog Bite: Elmhurst Police

ELMHURST, IL — After a man was caught in the act of forgery, two other men with him were also charged, according to Elmhurst police.

Darnell W. Buckner, 40, of Chicago, was arrested at 1 p.m. Thursday on a charge of forgery. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail. According to a police report, officers responded to a forgery in progress at iMotorsports, 334 W. Grand Ave., with Buckner presenting a fraudulent driver's license and Social Security card to buy a motorcycle. Kevin Daniels, 38, of Chicago, who was with Buckner, was arrested on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail. Police said he brought a backpack containing currency, a pistol and jewelry into the dealership. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail. A third man, Tilray K. Montgomery, 44, of Chicago, was arrested on charges of no valid driver's license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was released on bond.

Theft

• A victim called police to say her grandson left his iPhone at Thornton's gas station, 476 N. York St., about 2:30 a.m. May 30 and upon returning to the store, he could not find it. Video surveillance showed a suspect took the phone and left the store. Officers spoke to the suspect, who said he was a frequent customer and planned to return the phone later. The suspect gave up the phone to officers, who then returned it to the victim.
• A suspect concealed over-the-counter medication and exited without paying for it about 3:30 p.m. May 30 at Mariano's, 678 N. York St. The incident was caught on a surveillance camera.
• Two women concealed several cosmetic items by putting them into bags and left without paying for them about 8 p.m. May 29 at Walgreens, 160 N. Robert Palmer Road. Both suspects were described as Hispanic and 18 to 21 years old. The first one had long dark red hair and was wearing a face mask, a dark zip-up hooded sweatshirt, black pants, white socks and black sandals. The second had long black hair in a ponytail and was wearing prescription eyeglasses, a face mask, a black hooded sweatshirt with white writing on it, gray sweatpants and white gym shoes.
• A 2018 silver Honda Civic was stolen between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m May 28 at Wilkins Hyundai, 300 W. Grand Ave. The car had been scheduled for maintenance. A porter for the victim company arrived to retrieve the car, but the car and its keys could not be found. It was believed the key was left inside the car.
• An officer responded to a report of a forgery at Elmhurst College, 190 Prospect, on May 29. Suspects created and attempted to cash 15 fraudulent checks containing the victim's account information. An investigation continues.
• Video surveillance showed a man turned a locked door knob about 5 a.m. May 30 to gain access to the front entry door to a garage in the 100 block of Oak Street. The suspect was unable to get into the garage. The man also entered her unlocked gray GMC and rummaged through the interior. Nothing was missing. He was described as black, 16 to 20 years old, having black short hair and wearing a gray and white hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, black shorts and dark gym shoes.

Driver violations

• Johann A. Mendoza-Catala, 20, of Elgin, was arrested about 11:30 a.m. May 30 at York and Vallette on charges of driving with a suspended license and disobeying a stop sign. He was released on bond.
• Daniella I. Garcia, 36, of Chicago, was arrested about 11:30 a.m. May 28 in the 1000 block of South York on charges of driving with a suspended license and speeding. She was released on bond.
• A driver was clocked going over 100 mph shortly after midnight May 29 near Route 83 and Interstate 290. The officer tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver would not stop. The officer did not pursue the car.
• A woman went to the police station to tell an officer that while she was driving about 5 p.m. May 29 near North and Route 83, a driver "aggressively" forced her car into another lane and yelled at the victim. The officer attempted to contact the suspect, but was unsuccessful. The victim later said she no longer wished to pursue charges.

Other

• Claude L. Reed, 25, of Westmont, was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. May 30 on a warrant. He was taken to the Cook County Jail. According to a police report, officers arrived at Elmhurst Hospital's Center for Health, 1200 S. York St., to check on the well-being of a man, later identified as Reed, who was either asleep or unconscious. The officers met with Reed, who was sitting on a bench, and found he had an active Cook County warrant.
• Tony Malik Smith, 23, of Hammond, Ind., was arrested about 7 p.m. May 30 in the 300 block of East Butterfield on a charge of disorderly conduct involving befouling property. He was released on bond.
• A jogger was in the 200 block of Elm Avenue about 11 a.m. May 30 when she reached toward a mixed breed dog that was on an anchored leash in a front yard. The dog lunged at her and bit her on the leg. The dog's owner said the animal was up to date on his vaccinations.
• Police responded to a domestic disturbance about 11:30 p.m. May 31 in the 700 block of North Michigan Street. The victim said the suspect punched him in the arm. The officer saw no signs of injury, and the victim did not want to sign a complaint in the matter.
