How Elmhurst House Fire Was Discovered

A neighbor went sleuthing for the origin of a burning smell and smoke alarm, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – An Elmhurst woman came home in the afternoon of Nov. 6 in the 300 block of South Mitchell Avenue.

She smelled something burning and heard a fire alarm going off, according to an Elmhurst police report.

She went inside her house and called City Hall about it.

Then she knocked on neighbors' doors to see if she could find the origin of the smell and alarm, police said.

When she visited two houses south of hers, she heard the alarm going off. She walked around to the back and saw smoke coming from the house, police said.

She returned to her house, called City Hall again and reported where the smoke was coming from, the report said.

Firefighters arrived about 2:15 p.m. The homeowner later told police that she and her son left the house at 8:15 a.m. and everything seemed fine.

The damage was reported mostly on the second floor, where the bedrooms are.

A family pet died in the fire, police said.
