IDOT Reminds Drivers 'Turn Around, Don't Drown'

With recent flooding and heavy rain, it's important to keep these tips in mind.

ELMHURST, IL — With the recent heavy rainfall in the area, the Illinois Department of Transportation reminds motorists to be safe and look out for flooded roadways. According to a release from IDOT, several roads are closed due to flooding, mainly in Lake County, and driving conditions will be challenging until the flood waters settle. IDOT maintenance crews continue to monitor for standing water and respond to flooding incidents.

Until the flood waters recede, IDOT recommends keeping these driving tips in mind:

  • Do not drive through flooded areas
  • If a road covered by water seems shallow enough to cross, do not attempt to do so
  • If your car stalls, do not attempt to push it out; seek higher ground

According to the release, before leaving your house, map your route on IDOT’s Getting Around Illinois website. It’s a web-based interactive map that provides continually updated information on closures due to flooding, other road conditions and more.
