BENSENVILLE, IL – A Chicago man earlier this month held up a Bensenville convenience store at knifepoint and stole money from the cash register, authorities said.

Willie Weaver, 47, was charged with felony armed robbery, police said. A judge ordered Weaver to be jailed until his trial.

About 11 p.m. May 3, Weaver followed a clerk at the Casey's gas station, 1225 E. Devon Ave., into the store after the clerk threw away boxes in an outside bin, DuPage County prosecutors said in a news release Friday.

The clerk unlocked the door to an employee-only section of the store, but Weaver kept him from closing it, police said.

Weaver then pointed a knife with a 3-inch blade at the clerk, who retreated with his hands up and was forced to open a cash register, prosecutors said.

During a brief struggle, Weaver is accused of lunging at the clerk with the knife.

Weaver took $129 from the register and left in a black Nissan, police said.

An investigation led police to Weaver as the suspect, prosecutors said.

About 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Weaver was stopped in a black Nissan at Elmhurst Road and Touhy Avenue, just north of Bensenville, police said. He was arrested.

"It is alleged that Mr. Weaver threatened at knifepoint a man who was just trying to make an honest living," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the news release. "In DuPage County, we have zero tolerance for the type of armed violence as alleged in this case, and we are all thankful that the clerk was not injured."

Weaver faces between six and 30 years in prison, Berlin said.
