Man Brings Gun Into Elmhurst Bank: Cops

The man is accused of impersonating a bank customer and trying to withdraw $10,000, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – A man who impersonated someone else to withdraw money at an Elmhurst bank was armed with a loaded semiautomatic handgun, police said.

About 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Saifullah Diab, 33, of Norridge, presented forged documents at Fifth Third Bank, 990 N. York St., to withdraw $10,000 from a bank customer's account, Elmhurst police said in a news release.

Two police officers were called to the bank to investigate, with one speaking to Diab and the other to a bank employee.

Diab provided a false name to the officer and tried to leave, police said. When the officer detained Diab, he found the gun tucked into the man's pants, police said. It was reported as stolen.

Officers also said they found ecstasy and cocaine on Diab.

Diab was charged with two counts of forgery, one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

"I commend the alert bank employees who recognized a customer’s identity was being used by this suspect and for promptly alerting Elmhurst police of this in-progress crime," Police Chief Michael McLean said in the news release. "I also wish to thank the responding police officer for his quick action to safely take Mr. Diab into custody, preventing an armed suspect from fleeing the crime scene."
