Officer Shot 8 Times Responding To Domestic: DuPage Officials

BENSENVILLE, IL — A Bensenville man was charged with first-degree attempted murder after police say he shot an officer eight times.

The officer, later identified as Steven Kotlewski of the Bensenville Police Department, responded to a report of a domestic disturbance just before 1 a.m. Saturday at an apartment in the 100 block of South York Road.

Kotlewski was speaking with the occupants of the apartment when Kiante J. Tyler, 21, pulled a gun and fired 10 times, prosecutors said.

Eight of those bullets struck Kotlewski. According to a GoFundMe campaign set up for the officer's family, one bullet hit Kotlewski in the back and was stopped by his ballistic vest. A second shot struck him in the back under his vest, and he was shot multiple times in both legs.

The campaign said Kotlewski was in a medically induced coma and underwent a nine-hour surgery on his legs. Another surgery attempted to repair his colon, kidney, liver and diaphragm, along with his pelvis, according to the campaign set up by a relative, which has raised more than $75,000 as of Monday afternoon.

Other officers who arrived at the apartment building heard the gunshots and found Kotlewski crawling in a stairwell and rendered aid, applying tourniquets to the heavily bleeding officer, the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office said in a news release. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Officials said Tyler surrendered to another officer at the scene. Police reportedly found a 9 mm pistol on the kitchen counter in the apartment.

A judge denied bail for Tyler on Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reported. Over the weekend, Tyler's mother told NBC 5 that she called 911 because her son was acting out and suffering from mental health issues.

Tyler is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery to an officer with a firearm and two counts of aggravated battery to an officer.
