North York St. Now Has Dedicated Crosswalk

An Elmhurst alderman called it a "great, great thing." A little to the north, a woman died crossing the street in January.

Flashing lights for a dedicated crosswalk started operating Monday near Yorky's restaurant on North York Street. An alderman advised that pedestrians be cautious using it.

ELMHURST, IL – North York Street in Elmhurst now has a dedicated crosswalk.

The crosswalk is part of the North York construction project. It is near Yorky's restaurant, in the 800 block of North York.

The crosswalk has flashing lights letting drivers know pedestrians are in the crosswalk.

At Monday's City Council meeting, Ward 3 Alderman Michael Bram told his colleagues that he happened to be driving by when the contractor was testing the lights.

"That's a great, great thing that this is relatively close to a townhome complex and schools," he said. "There is a safe path that gets you halfway across North York and then buttons again to alert traffic it is a pedestrian crosswalk."

But Bram advised pedestrians be careful.

When the contractor tested the equipment, the alderman said, some drivers slowed down and stopped, while others did not.

"Just use it as cautiously as possible, but it's great to see a dedicated crosswalk on North York," Bram said.

A quarter mile to the north is North York's intersection with Diversey Avenue. In late January, 74-year-old Elmhurst resident Rosemary Rice was hit by a car and killed when crossing York at Diversey, which is near her apartment. Residents have long called for more safety at the intersection.
