Odor Could Be Present As Work Begins On Gas Main In Elmhurst

NICOR plans to pump product into a recently abandoned gas main near I-290 and Vallette Road.

ELMHURST, IL — Those who live or work in Elmhurst on Friday may notice an odor in the air, but city officials say there will be nothing to be concerned about. Am odor may emit as early at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 20 as NICOR begins work on an abandoned gas main near I-290 and Vallette Street.

According to the city of Elmhurst, the odor may be caused by "pressure relief purge stacks (that) will allow the grout product to move" while product is injected into the recently abandoned 20” gas main.

The odor could be most present in the area north of St. Charles Road and east of Park Avenue.

"Residents should not be concerned with this process, as it is safe, highly controlled, and necessary for this project," the city said in a statement.
