ELMHURST, IL – An Elmhurst girl waiting in the rain for the school bus and struggling with a broken umbrella got a stranger's offer to sit in a car, local police said this week.

On Wednesday morning, the girl was in the 500 block of Sunset Avenue when a driver pulled up and asked her if she would like to wait in the car, police said in a news release.

The girl politely declined and told her parent about the offer, police said.

Elmhurst police canvassed the neighborhood, obtained surveillance video and quickly identified the driver as a 20-year-old female dog walker who worked in the area, police said.

After a thorough investigation, police said they determined the offer was a well-intentioned gesture and not a threat to the community.
