Retail Theft, Car Burglaries: Elmhurst Cops

Police receive reports of three retail thefts at local stores. Descriptions are given in the cases.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving retail theft, car burglaries, the discovery of three handguns, a sidewalk fall, a Medicare scam and discarded security boxes. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:

Retail theft

  • A man stole multiple Claritin and Nexium products about 9 p.m. Thursday at Jewel, 944 S. York St. He was last seen walking east on Butterfield Road. He was described as white, 20 to 30 years old, 155 pounds, having brown hair with a mustache and goatee, and wearing a black winter hat, black jacket and blue jeans.
  • A man and two women stole a cart full of liquor about 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Jewel, 944 S. York St. An investigation is pending. The man was described as black, 6 feet, and wearing a red do-rag and beige jumpsuit. The women were black, one had long eyelashes and the other sported a nose piercing.
  • A man and a woman stole several bottles of liquor about 12:30 a.m. from CVS Pharmacy, 110 W. North Ave. They left in an older model black SUV. The man was described as black, 6-foot-4, 30 to 40 years old, and wearing all black clothing with a black hooded sweatshirt and coat. The woman was described as white, 45 to 50 years old and wearing a black coat with a red hoodie.

  • A person in the 200 block of North Addison told police that someone entered his parked car and removed a box containing a Lenovo laptop between April 1 and April 11.
  • A woman told police that her purse was stolen from the trunk of her car between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Sky Zone Trampoline Park, 325 W. Lake St. Video showed the suspect backing in next to the victim's car, opening his trunk, removing the purse from the victim's vehicle, placing it in his trunk and driving away. An investigation is pending.

Three guns found

  • A homeowner in the 500 block of South Berkley told police Saturday that he found three handguns left behind by a previous tenant. The guns were submitted to the police department for safekeeping for the owner to pick up.

Suspicious car

  • Police received a call shortly before 6:30 p.m. Thursday about a suspicious vehicle with two males in the 600 block of South York Street. An investigation is pending.

Fall on sidewalk

  • A person fell on the sidewalk while walking about 9 a.m. Friday in the 900 block of North York Street. The person was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

Medicare scam

  • A resident in the 600 block of Lorraine Avenue told police Friday that she received a phone call from a stranger who posed as a Medicare employee. The suspect asked the resident for her Medicare number, which the victim provided. The resident checked her Medicare account and has not found any fraudulent activity. She said she would continue to monitor her account.

Locker burglary

  • A person told police that someone broke into his storage locker and stole bottles, a drill, batteries and a charger between March 26 and April 16 in the 200 block of North Addison Avenue.

Converter theft

  • A catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle between Feb. 19 and April 26 at U-Stor-It, 877 S. Route 83.

Security boxes discarded

  • Police were told that someone was seen discarding security boxes at 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot at CVS Pharmacy, 110 W. North Ave. An officer found four empty boxes belonging to CVS in the parking lot. An investigation is pending.

Sexual assault

  • An Elmhurst officer showed up about 5 a.m. Saturday at Elmhurst Hospital, 155 E. Brush Hill Road, for a sexual assault report. The victim did not wish to speak to police, but said she would be willing to talk later.
