Retail Theft, Chronic Nuisance: Elmhurst Cops

Three shoplifting cases were reported to the police. Two involved alcohol.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving retail theft, a chronic nuisance, drug possession, a car burglary, fraud and a fugitive driver, among other incidents. Here is information from the reports:

Retail theft

  • A man stole alcohol about 11 p.m. Wednesday at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St. He was last seen headed north on York Street. An investigation is pending. The man was described as black, 50 to 55, 6 feet tall, having a medium build, and wearing a T-shirt and jogging pants.
  • Two people stole six or seven cases of Tito's vodka about 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St. Officers found the suspects' car, but the driver sped away, heading east on Interstate 290. The first suspect was described as a black man, 25 years old, 5-foot-9, having a medium build and facial hair, and wearing jeans. A detailed description of the second suspect was not given.
  • Four women stole clothing about 7:30 p.m Monday from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83. The store reported the theft Wednesday after seeing the women on surveillance footage. On Thursday, four women were seen removing hangers from a large number of clothing items about 6 a.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of Emroy Avenue. They placed the clothing into black plastic bags and drove north from there. Police believe the incidents are connected. The first suspect was described as black, 20 to 30, having a medium build and long black hair, and wearing a blue and gray jacket, pink pants and black shoes. The second suspect was described as black, 20 to 30, having a medium build and short black hair, and wearing a light blue and gray jacket, black pants and purple shoes. The third suspect was black, 20 to 30, having a medium build and medium length hair, and wearing a light and blue jacket, black pants and tan shoes. The final one was described as black, having a thin build and orange medium length hair, and wearing a yellow jacket, tan pants and black shoes.

  • A chronic nuisance warning was issued Tuesday to a household in the 600 block of West Belden Avenue.

Fraud

  • The nephew of a resident in the 200 block of South Chandler Avenue fraudulently withdrew money from his aunt's account between March 1, 2020, and Dec. 20, 2021.

Drug possession

  • Stefanie Davis, 38, of Northlake, was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at West and First on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen property, driving with a suspended license, transportation of open alcohol, speeding and driving an uninsured car. She was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

Suspicious

  • A man told police about 5:30 p.m. Monday that he was being followed and that a man had stolen his identity. The man being followed said he needed no assistance. Police listed the incident as "suspicious circumstances."

Car burglary

  • Someone stole a Gucci backpack from an unattended car with its windows down between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday. The car was parked at Eldridge Park on Spring Road.

Garbage issue

  • Someone discarded garbage in front of a neighbor's house Sunday in the 800 block of South Stratford Avenue. An investigation is pending.

Fugitive driver

  • A Mercedes-Benz was involved in a suspicious incident at a dealership in Bensenville. An Elmhurst officer spotted the car about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday near Lake Street and Interstate 290 and tried to stop it. The driver sped away, last seen headed east on I-290.

Following

  • A driver told police that another driver followed her from Interstate 290 to near Elmhurst University and took a picture of her and her car about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Trespassing

  • York High School personnel told police that someone tried to enter the school but discovered the door was locked about 2 p.m. Wednesday. Officers quickly found the person and identified the person as an Elmhurst resident. The person recounted trying to enter the building to use a restroom. Upon discovering the doors were locked, the person immediately left. The person was issued a no-trespass notice.

Graffiti

  • While on patrol of the city's parking deck at 149 N. Addison Ave., an officer saw three graffiti drawings on the concrete walls in the northwest corner of the sixth floor Wednesday. The public works department was notified.

Drunk person

  • A drunk person was found about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of East Butterfield Road. The person, who was unable to care for himself, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

Identity theft

  • A resident in the 300 block of East Yorkfield told police Monday that someone used his information to open a bank account. The resident reported the fraud to the bank. No dollar loss has been determined.

Police report information is provided by local police departments. Charges are not evidence of guilt. They are a record of police actions on a given day, and people charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
