Itasca Man Dies In Elmhurst Car Crash: Cops

Authorities say they are investigating intoxication as a possible factor.

ELMHURST, IL – An Itasca man who was trying to pass another car on Elmhurst's two-lane St. Charles Road early Thursday evening died in a crash, police said. Authorities said they are investigating possible intoxication.

Police have not identified the 20-year-old man, who was driving an Infiniti sedan, according to an Elmhurst news release.

The driver of a Toyota minivan suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the drivers of an Acura sedan and a Lexus SUV were not injured, police said.

Police said the 20-year-old man was first traveling northbound on Route 83 in Oakbrook Terrace at Roosevelt Road when he was involved in a collision with another car, but he did not stop, police said. He continued north on Route 83 to St. Charles Road with the other car in the earlier crash following him for a time, according to the release.

About 7 p.m., the 20-year-old sped east on St. Charles and tried to pass the Acura by driving over the St. Charles centerline at Argyle Avenue, police said. His car first collided with the Acura, then struck the westbound Toyota minivan head-on, with debris striking the Lexus, police said.

Authorities said the 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the site of the crash.

Elmhurst police said they and the DuPage County Coroner's Office are investigating.
