The victim, who was driving a gray Nissan Sentra, brake-checked Johnson, who was tailgating him, police said.

The resulting road rage lasted for four to five miles. At one point, Johnson, driving a gold Honda Odyssey minivan, pulled up alongside the victim and displayed a handgun, according to the release.

Seeing the gun, the victim tried to leave the expressway, but Johnson rear-ended him, police said,

Next, Johnson, his face covered by a ski mask, appeared on the passenger side of the victim's car and fired about eight shots from his car into the victim's car, authorities said.

Three bullet defects were found on the passenger side of the car, and two projectiles or fragments were recovered from the passenger side floorboard and trunk area, police said.

Two shell casings also were found on the road, police said.

On Thursday, an officer from Berkeley, just east of Elmhurst, conducted a traffic stop on Johnson's minivan, police said. Johnson was then arrested.

"The type of violent behavior alleged against Mr. Johnson placed numerous innocent motorists at risk and will most certainly not be tolerated in DuPage County," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

A DuPage County judge denied bail for Johnson.
