Take a Deeper Look at New Exhibit at the Elmhurst Historical Museum

The Elmhurst Historical Museum presents two free learning opportunities this month in connection with "Let Children Be Children."

The Elmhurst Historical Museum presents two free learning opportunities this month in connection with “Let Children Be Children: Lewis Wickes Hine’s Crusade Against Child Labor,” a national touring exhibition from the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, NY.

Gallery Talk with Musician & Labor Historian Bucky Halker

On Friday, January 23, 2015 at 4 p.m., the Elmhurst Historical Museum welcomes labor historian and folk musician Bucky Halker for a Gallery Talk that will take a deeper look at the “Let Children Be Children” exhibit in the first floor gallery. With his guitar in hand, Halker will provide historical perspective and examine American child labor practices and politics of the early 20th century expressed in folk songs of the era. The exhibit will be open prior to the talk from 1 until 5 p.m. The program is free. No reservations are required.

Lecture by Art Historian Carl Fuldner

On Saturday, January 24 at 2 p.m., Carl Fuldner, a photography specialist and instructor in the University of Chicago’s Art History Department, will be in the Elmhurst Historical Museum’s Education Center with the illustrated lecture Looking and Learning: How Lewis Hine Came to Photograph Children. Fuldner will discuss Lewis Hine’s life, influences, and his legacy for photography, and examine how Hine transformed the camera into a tool for affecting social change. Visit the exhibit in the Museum before or after the lecture from 1-5 p.m. This program is free. No reservations are required.

The Elmhurst Historical Museum is located at 120 E. Park Ave. in Elmhurst. The current exhibit, Let Children Be Children, is open on Tuesdays through Sundays from 1 until 5 p.m. through April 5, 2015. Admission is free.
