Theft, Garage Fire: Elmhurst Police

Man faces drug charges after he stole a bicycle, police say.

ELMHURST, IL — In the last few days, Elmhurst police responded to a theft, a fire, protection order issues and a dog at large. Here is information from the police department's latest blotter:

  • Authorities responded to a fire about 6 p.m. April 30 in a garage in the 600 block of West Elm Park Avenue. The fire appeared to originate from a garbage can near the detached garage.
  • A resident informed police that she heard children yelling for help from an open window of an apartment complex about 1:30 p.m. May 2 in the 100 block of West Virginia Street. Officers found the apartment and spoke to an adult and three children inside. The children said they were yelling at each other and did not appear to be in distress.
  • A juvenile was found lying on the ground about midnight May 1 in the 100 block of South Arlington Avenue. The juvenile admitted to consuming alcohol. He was cited on charges of consumption of alcohol by a minor and violation of curfew. He was released to his parents.
  • Darren Jones, 29, of Chicago, was arrested shortly after 11 a.m. April 30 at California and Flournoy in Chicago on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail. According to a police report, Elmhurst officers tried to stop Jones on April 29 as part of a drug investigation. He fled from officers and was taken into custody later.
  • Freddie Edwards, 43, of Chicago, was arrested shortly after noon May 1 at St. Charles and Route 83 on charges of obstructing a police officer, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail. According to a police report, Edwards was found to be in possession of heroin.
  • Police responded to a "verbal domestic" about 7 p.m. April 30 in the 100 block of West Butterfield. While investigating, officers learned the suspect had an active order of protection that had not been served. An officer completed a short form notification and served the suspect at the site of the disturbance.
  • Police responded about 1 a.m. May 2 to Spring Hill Suites, 410 W. Lake St., after receiving an anonymous tip of a car involved in a burglary in Kane County. An investigation continues.
  • An officer tried to stop a speeding car headed east about 4:30 a.m. May 2 near Interstate 290 and Lake. The car sped away from the officer. The car is described as a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo. An investigation continues.
  • A woman informed police her husband violated his order of protection by removing property from a self-storage locker May 1 at 297 W. Lake St. An officer learned the the order of protection had not been served on the husband. The officer contacted the suspect, and he agreed to come to the police station to received the order of protection.
  • Police received a report of a dog at large at 11:30 a.m. May 3 in the 100 block of East Adams. The dog was found and returned to its owner. An investigation continues.
