Villa Park FD earns Elmhurst Hospital's "Run of the Month"

Elmhurst Hospital’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has awarded its “Run of the Month” for April 2019 to the Villa Park Fire Dept. (VPFD).

On April 24, VPFD personnel were dispatched to a residence with a report of a tree trimmer who had been electrocuted and gone into cardiac arrest and had severe burns on his hands and upper left leg.

Upon arrival, paramedics found the patient on the ground, pulseless and not breathing, with his co-worker performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The crew began Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and within a few minutes, the 37-year-old male patient had a pulse and was breathing on his own.

The crew transported the patient to the Elmhurst Hospital Emergency Department. He was later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center’s Burn Unit. Due, in part, to the exceptional care the patient received in the field, he walked out of the hospital a few days later and continued receiving therapy for his injuries.

In the “Run of the Month” program, Elmhurst Hospital’s EMS Team reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital providers and selects one to be recognized based on the following criteria:

--Excellent communication from the field that resulted in the timely delivery of pertinent clinical information to the Elmhurst Hospital ED staff

--Clear and thorough documentation

--Superior clinical assessment skills that resulted in accurate recognition of a clinical situation

--Behavior exceeding the call of duty in the field

--Superior partnership and teamwork with Elmhurst Hospital
