Wallet Theft, Suspicious People: Elmhurst Cops

A shopper at a local store said someone stole her wallet from her purse, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving a wallet theft, suspicious people, an issue with a FOID card, a drug overdose, trespassing, a DUI, shoplifting and drug possession. Here is information from the latest reports:

Wallet theft

  • Someone stole a woman's wallet from her purse between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Whole Foods Market, 265 S. Route 83. It happened while she was shopping. The woman later discovered a fraudulent transaction on her account. An investigation is pending.

  • A man told police that he was taking photos of a house for insurance purposes about 4:30 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of North Lorraine. When he drove away, a person started to follow him, driving recklessly. The other person said he was being photographed by the man and followed him to obtain a license plate number. No one filed a complaint.
  • A man was trying to flag down drivers about 3 p.m. Wednesday at Route 83 and Interstate 290. He told police he was trying to sell gold chains to passing motorists. The man said he would leave Elmhurst and would not return.

FOID problem

  • A resident in the 800 block of South Mitchell Avenue told police Tuesday that he submitted an application for the renewal of his firearm owner's identification card, or FOID. He said he had not received the card, although the state told him it was sent to him in early August. The resident did not know who may have taken his card. He was advised to file a police report.

  • Officers and medics responded to a person lying on the ground unconscious about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of North York Street. Medics administered a nasal spray that is used to treat drug overdoses. The person was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

Trespassing

  • Elmhurst University reported that two suspects knocked over a portable restroom on campus about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The school did not sign a complaint. Both suspects were served with no-trespass orders.

DUI

  • Daniel Bautista, 22, of Chicago, was arrested about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at North and West on charges of DUI (marijuana), illegal possession of marijuana by a driver, driving an uninsured vehicle and improper lane usage. He was released on bond.

Cat found

  • A pedestrian was in the 200 block of East First Street about 6:30 a.m. when the driver of a maroon Volkswagen Jetta pulled over and said he found a cat. The pedestrian did not approach the car, and the driver left the area, heading west. The driver later told an officer he found a cat and wanted assistance.

Shoplifting

  • Three women stole several items off the clothing racks about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83. They left in a silver Nissan SUV and were last seen heading west on St. Charles Road. An investigation is pending. The women were described as black, 20 to 25 years old, and 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7. One of the women was 200 pounds, had braided hair and was wearing a pink sweatshirt, pink sweatpants, a light-colored mask and pink sneakers. The second one was described as 155 pounds and wearing gray jeans and a brown hooded sweatshirt. The third was 145 pounds and wearing a white T-shirt, blue sweatpants and blue gym shoes.

Drug possession

  • Branko Filimonovic, 46, of Chicago, was arrested about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of North York Street on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

Fugitive drivers

  • The driver of a Mazda Tribute SUV sped away from an Oakbrook Terrace police officer about 5 a.m. Tuesday. Shortly after, an Elmhurst officer saw the suspect's car near Roosevelt and York and tried to conduct a traffic stop. The driver again sped away, last seen headed south on Interstate 294.
  • About 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, an officer tried to stop a driver who was wanted in a number of towns for aggravated fleeing and burglary to motor vehicles. The driver, who was first seen at Berteau and North, sped away, last seen heading east on Interstate 290 from Mannheim Road.

Bicycle theft

  • An abandoned yellow and black Hummer brand 8-speed mountain bicycle was found about 3 a.m. Tuesday at SpringHill Suites, 410 W. Lake St. It was placed into evidence for safekeeping.
