ELMHURST, IL — The Elmhurst public schools seem poised to bring back elementary school students for in-person learning Sept. 14. But the start date for middle and high school students appears to be up in the air.

In a mass email to parents this week, Superintendent Dave Moyer said first through fifth grades are slated to return for in-person learning Sept 14. This next phase will involve a mix of in-person and remote days.

Moyer said information about the first day of in-person learning for sixth through 12th graders would be sent by Sept. 10.

According to the district, kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes are set to begin next Tuesday.

The school district began its school year remotely last week. It had hoped to start the school year with a blend of in-person and remote learning. But it said too many teachers were seeking remote assignments, so it delayed in-person lessons by three weeks. It has since rejected most of the remote requests.

The teachers union, which opposed in-person learning in light of the pandemic, said last week it was negotiating with the district and that it could not comment further.

Many other public schools have yet to begin in-person learning. Meanwhile, Elmhurst's IC Catholic Prep started a blend of in-person and remote learning two weeks ago. Patch left a message with the school Thursday about how it has been going.
