Youth Steals Car From Elmhurst Dealership: Cops

The boy drove into oncoming traffic when he was being pursued, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – A 13-year-old Chicago boy was arrested early Monday morning after he stole a car from an Elmhurst dealership, authorities said.

About 1:30 a.m., an Elmhurst officer was called about a 2020 Kia Forte and an SUV on the side of North York Street. When the officer pulled behind the cars, the drivers sped away, according to a news release from DuPage County prosecutors.

The officer tried to stop the cars, but they sped away, with the youth driving into oncoming traffic, prosecutors said. The chase was ended shortly after because of safety concerns.

Police learned the car was stolen from Wilkins Hyundai, 750 N. York St., the news release said.

About 3 a.m., Oak Park police found the Kia Forte, with the boy in the front seat, authorities said.

Prosecutors alleged the boy broke a window to the Kia Forte and drove the car off the lot.

The youth was charged with felony possession of a stolen vehicle, felony possession of burglary tools, misdemeanor damage to property and misdemeanor fleeing an officer.

"The increase in violent juvenile crime we have experienced is extremely disturbing," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "I want to be perfectly clear, however, in DuPage County anyone who commits this type of behavior, regardless of their age, will be caught and held accountable."
