Pedestrian Killed In Hit-And-Run On Howard, Driver In Custody
A man in his 60s was struck and killed at Howard and Chicago, before another pedestrian was injured at Dempster and Chicago, police said.

EVANSTON, IL — A pedestrian died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver Wednesday night on Howard Street, police said. The driver later surrendered to the Chicago Police Department. The man fatally struck at Howard and Chicago Avenue before 9 p.m. Thursday was 66-year-old Chicago resident Kenneth Ebenreiter, according to Cmdr. Ryan Glew.
The driver of a car headed west on Howard Street struck a pedestrian around 8:20 p.m. at the east crosswalk of the intersection with Chicago Avenue, according to Glew. The pedestrian was taken to St. Francis hospital and later pronounced dead. The driver, later identified as Brandon Pommels, fled the scene but later turned himself in to the 24th District. The driver remained in custody pending charges from an ongoing investigation, Glew said.

About 1.7 miles north and an hour later, another pedestrian was struck and injured by a different vehicle at 9:32 p.m., according to Glew.
A 30-year-old Libertyville man wan who had walked into the road from an area around parked cars was hit by car headed south on Chicago Avenue. The man was in critical condition in intensive care Thursday, Glew said.

In the second incident, the driver remained on scene and was not arrested, according to Glew. Both incidents are being investigated by the Major Crash Assistance Team.
