Driver Charged In Fatal Hit-And-Run; Knifepoint Robbery: Blotter

Incidents and arrests from the Evanston Police Department blotter for Aug. 22 to Aug. 31.

EVANSTON, IL — The following information comes from the Evanston Police Department as a record of those arrested by police and incidents reported to police. Readers are reminded that an arrest is not an indication of guilt and criminal charges, which represent merely accusations by the state, are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. All persons named are innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

  • Someone tried to break into an apartment in the 300 block of Custer Avenue around 4 a.m. on Aug. 21 by removing the screens from the windows. No entry was made and nothing was taken.
  • A burglar got into a single-family home in the 1300 block of Greenwood Street around 11:45 p.m. on Aug. 22 through an unlocked sliding door on the patio, stealing a purse, wallet and keys from inside.
  • Someone entered an apartment in the 300 block of Custer Avenue between 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 and 9 p.m. on Aug. 22 and stole unspecified items.
  • A burglar got into a single-family home in the 2000 block of Washington Street through an unlocked window between 3 and 3:15 a.m. on Aug. 25. Nothing was reported stolen.
  • Someone got into a single-family home in the 1900 block of Washington Street through an unlocked window between 12:30 and 7:10 a.m. on Aug. 25, stealing a purse and a television.

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a 2001 Mitsubishi with a Wisconsin license plate around 12:20 a.m. on Aug. 24 from the 1800 block of Hovland Court using a key.

CAR BURGLARY/CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Someone smashed the windows of a Toyota parked in an apartment building's parking spaces between 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 and 7 a.m. on Aug. 27 in the 1400 block of Emerson Street. Nothing was stolen at the time of the report.
  • Someone pried open the door of a Volkswagen parked in the 1900 block of Wesley Avenue between 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 and 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 27. A laptop and computer hardware was reported stolen.
  • Someone broke a window of a Toyota parked in the 1200 block of Simpson Street and stole a purse from inside between 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 and 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 29.
  • Someone stole CDs and cases from inside a Pontiac parked near the intersection of Noyes Street and Wesley Avenue between 6 p.m. Aug. 28 and 7 a.m. Aug. 29.

SHOTS FIRED

  • Gunfire was reported around 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 23 in the 200 block of Grey Avenue.
  • Shots were also reported fired shortly before 9 p.m. on Aug. 23 in the 1700 block of Hovland Court.
  • There was a report of gunfire in the 1400 block of Grey Avenue around 2:42 a.m. on Aug. 25.
  • Around 8:42 p.m. on Aug. 26, shots were reportedly fired in the 700 block of Dobson Street.
  • An incident of shots fired was reported in the 1800 block of Hovland Court at 10:54 p.m. on Aug. 30.

ARMED ROBBERY
A robber brandished a knife and stole cash from a person walking on the sidewalk around 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 30 in the 1700 block of Sherman Avenue.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Joseph B. Hayes, 27, of the 400 block of Arlington Avenue in Elgin, was arrested around 7 p.m. on Aug. 18 in the 2900 block of Central Street and charged with forgery.

Elmo S. Hatfield, 49, of the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue in Evanston, was arrested at 10:11 p.m. on Aug. 19 and charged with identity theft.

Ryan B. Barrett, 34, of the 1000 block of Main Street in Evanston, was arrested at 2:45 a.m. on Aug. 28 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Phuong N. Le, 58, of the 1800 block of Darrow Avenue in Evanston, was arrested at 2:50 p.m. on Aug. 24 down the block from his home and charged with driving under the influence.

Anthony G. Munsey-Johnson, 18, of the 500 block of Custer Avenue in Evanston, was arrested around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 and charged with residential burglary and criminal trespassing.

Brian Patron, 33, of the 1400 block of Sherman Avenue in Evanston, was arrested at 4:50 p.m. on Aug. 29 in the 1600 block of Dempster Street and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Devonte C. Moret, 20, of the 200 block of Richmond Avenue in Evanston, was arrested around 6 p.m. on Aug. 30 and charged with cannabis felonies and misdemeanor possession of ammunition without a FOID card. He had been on bond at the time after being charged with a firearm offence in March.

Brandon S. Pommells, 27, of the 1700 block of McDaniel Avenue in Evanston, was arrested at 11:15 p.m. on Aug. 29 and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, a felony, and other traffic offenses after he turned himself in to the Chicago Police Department's 24th District at 6464 N. Clark St. in connection with a hit-and-run incident earlier that evening in the westbound lanes of Howard Street at the intersection with Chicago Avenue.

William M. Sanders, 24, of the 6800 block of South Wabash Avenue in Chicago, was arrested at 5:23 p.m. on Aug. 30 and charged with identity theft after reportedly trying to use someone else's credit card and a fake ID to rent a car from the Hertz at 1901 Green Bay Road.

David Carl Smith, 56, with no listed address, was arrested at the Cook County Jail on Aug. 29 and charged with two counts of retail theft in connection with shoplifting incidents in Evanston.
