📰 News we're reading

• County tax delays likely to hit library again (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston Public Library is again bracing for delayed Cook County property tax payments, with about $600,000 from 2024 still outstanding and more lags expected this year. Trustees are weighing whether to change financial practices to qualify for a county bridge loan, even as the City of Evanston itself no longer meets the program’s eligibility rules.

• Evanston home prices continue to climb (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston home prices are still rising, with typical values up 7.1% to about $484,000 and non-distressed median sale prices climbing to $455,000. Local gains are outpacing Chicago and some nearby suburbs, even as mortgage rates remain above 6% and many area residents are considered housing cost burdened.

• Trump White House Moves to End Groundbreaking Cash Reparations for Black Homeowners, Argues They're Illegal (newyorkbeacon.net) — Evanston’s landmark housing reparations program for Black residents is now facing a direct legal challenge from the U.S. Department of Justice, which argues the city’s race-based eligibility rules are unconstitutional. City leaders and program architect Robin Rue Simmons insist the initiative lawfully addresses historic housing discrimination in Evanston and say they’re prepared to defend it in federal court, with millions in grants already distributed.
