Arrest of Man With Handgun, Ammo Leads to Damaged Cop Car

The Evanston resident kicked the squad car's door after he was placed inside.

EVANSTON, IL - An Evanston man faces a slew of charges stemming from a Thursday night incident in which police found a handgun and ammunition on him during a traffic stop.

Devane O. Retreage, 31, of the 700 block of Wesley, has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, criminal damage to government supported property, possession of ammunition without a valid FOID card, driving while license revoked and a pair of traffic citations.

According to police, Retreage was stopped around 10:40 p.m. in the 400 block of Ridge Ave. for a minor traffic violation Thursday, and during the stop the officer recovered a loaded Ruger .357 Magnum handgun from under the front passenger seat. Eleven rounds of .357 magnum ammunition was found in Retreage’s pocket.

Upon arrest, Retreage is accused of damaging the squad car he was placed in.

“After being taken into custody and placed into the rear of a squad car, Retreage began to kick the rear door of the squad car with his feet, causing the top of the door to bend outward,” according to a police news release.
