Attempted Murder Charge In St. Paddy's Day Stabbing At McDonald's

A 49-year-old Evanston man remains hospitalized in serious condition after he was stabbed several times during a fight Saturday.

EVANSTON, IL — A homeless man is being held without bond on an attempted murder charge following a St. Patrick's Day stabbing at an Evanston fast food restaurant. Police said they received multiple calls around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday about a fight at the McDonald's at 1117 Howard St.

Witnesses told police two men had gotten into an argument inside the McDonald's. After exchanging words, they got into a fight. During the struggle, one man pulled out a knife and stabbed the other several times in front of customers and staff.

Police arrived to find a 49-year-old Evanston man suffering from multiple stab wounds. His attacker had already fled the scene. The victim was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he remained in serious condition as of Wednesday, according to Police Cmdr. Ryan Glew.

On Tuesday afternoon, officers arrested a man on the same block of Howard Street and soon suspected they had found the attacker.

Police said they got a call of a man waving a knife around inside a beauty supply store a few doors down from the McDonald's. Staff called 911 after he allegedly chased them out of the store with the blade.

When Evanston cops arrived to arrest the man, they recognized him from security camera footage recorded inside the McDonald's. Police said he later admitted to stabbing the man.

Olanrewaju M. Oshiga, a 32-year-old homeless man, was arrested at 1:43 p.m. in the 1100 block of Howard Street, initially on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors later approved a single count of attempted murder, police said.

Oshiga has numerous arrests in Chicago for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery. The most recent arrest occurred at a wing shop in the 1800 block of Howard Street just a week before he allegedly stabbed the Evanston man.

He is being held without bond ahead of an April 11 court date.
