Car Theft Suspect Flees Evanston Cops, Causes Halt of Yellow Line

The suspect abandoned the vehicle in the Target parking lot after being stopped near the Jewel on Howard Street Wednesday night.

EVANSTON, IL - Police in Evanston searching for a car theft suspect in James Park Wednesday night caused a temporary stoppage of the CTA Yellow Line.

Police stopped a car in the parking lot of Jewel Foods in the 2400 block of Howard Street around 9 p.m. and found the vehicle to have been reported stolen from south suburban Robbins.

A man driving the car fled to the nearby Target parking lot, where he abandoned the vehicle. A 19-year-old female passenger also fled on foot, but she was found nearby hiding in some bushes.

A police canine connected the scent from the car to James Park on Dodge Avenue. Yellow Line service in the area was halted while police searched the area and CTA tracks to no avail.

The woman was not arrested since the vehicle owner declined to press charges. The man is still at-large, but police say they have quite a bit of information on him.
