City Responds to Nicor Suit

City blames Nicor in court pleadings.

The city of Evanston released a statement Tuesday regarding “Nicor’s liability for environmental contamination in/around James Park.”

The statement claims the city was met with “stall tactics” and misinformation by Nicor, who recently sought a ruling regarding the source of the natural gas in the James Park area.

“The City worked to bridge the gap with Nicor in order to protect school children at Dawes School, sports teams using James Park, and seniors at the Levy Center,” the statement read. “Instead of partnering with the City on solutions, Nicor and its high priced attorneys raced to the courthouse steps.”

The city filed its pleadings in federal court on Monday, the statement says.

The findings “complement Nicor’s own admissions that its old infrastructure is leaking, hazardous, and failing in the James Park neighborhood.”
