ETHS Hires 4 New Head Coaches

Two assistants among those embarking on head coaching duties this year.

Evanston Township High School made the hiring of four new head coaches in the athletic department official last week.

Replacing 23-year ETHS coaching veteran Chester Jones at the helm of the gymnastics program will be Meghan Gordon, who will lead the girls and Frank Erwin, the new boys head coach.

Gordon assisted Jones during both the boys and girls seasons over the past six years and knows that replacing him won’t be easy, according to an ETHS Athletics news release.

“It’s not going to be easy to fill his shoes,” Gordon said. “He’s been one of my main mentors in my life, and not just as a coach. He taught me a lot. He’s helped me grow and a coach and I think he’s prepared me well.”

Erwin will return to coaching after a 30+year hiatus. He was the boys head gym coach at Naperville Central from 1977-1983, when he produced 10 high school All-American gymnasts and won two sectional championships.

Kate Johnson will succeed Luella Gesky as head coach of the varsity softball team after serving as the junior varsity coach for the past three seasons. Last year, she guided the Wildkits to a 17-8 record, one of the most successful JV seasons in team history.

Justin Porter will replace Adam Hughes at the helm of the boys lacrosse program. Porter served as an assistant coach the past three seasons at Loyola Academy.

He called the ETHS gig the “job I’ve been waiting for.”
