ETHS Locker Thieves Won't Face Charges

Video showed a school security guard remove items from student lockers. But the students won't testify in court.

EVANSTON, IL - Four Evanston Township High School students who were victims of thefts from their lockers by at least one school security guard - thefts that were captured on video - have refused to testify in court, so no charges will be filed.

All four victims talked to police about the incident, which included the school employee removing items from student lockers, according to Evanston Now.

ETHS has made no indication that the security guard will be fired, instead declining to comment specifically since it is a personnel matter. Superintendent Eric Witherspoon did release this statement:

"As a school district, we are deeply troubled by any report that an employee may have engaged in inappropriate behavior. Because the matter involves personnel, the district is prohibited from commenting on specifics."

Commenters on Evanston Now are livid about the situation, implying that the school would retaliate against the students had they agreed to testify in court.

“The students know that they would have a target on their backs for those in the Safety Department who want to make their lives miserable,” one wrote. “The students are not stupid. They knew that the 'fix' was in when this whole thing started and the administration would do nothing.”
