Evanston Alderman Gets Civil Union With Longtime Partner

Ald. Mark Tendam (6th Ward) received a civil union with his partner shortly after they were legally available to Illinois residents.

A minute after civil unions were legally available to people in Illinois, Evanston 6th Ward Alderman Mark Tendam held a ceremony with his partner of 21 years, Neal Moglin.

“Everyone loves a love story, and the only thing they love more than a love story is a love story with a happy ending,” Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl told TribLocal at the ceremony, held at the couple's home. “Twenty-one years is a long time, but this is a happy ending.”

Civil unions became legal in Illinois on June 1. The Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act allows same-sex partners hospital visitation rights and insurance coverage.
