Evanston City Employees Could Be Asked to Take Furloughs

If state cuts portion of budget it shares with municipalities, Evanston workers may be forced into two unpaid days off.

Two one-day furloughs could be coming for Evanston city workers if the state cuts the portion of state income tax revenue it shares with municipalities in half.

City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said that is among the steps the city may take to help deal with the cuts, according to Evanston Now. If the cuts already proposed by Governor Bruce Rauner take shape, Evanston could see a $3.5 million hole in its budget.

The furlough days being considered are the Friday before Labor Day and New Year’s Eve. Each day would save the city about $215,000, Bobkiewicz said.
