Evanston Firefighter Retires After 28 Years

The public is invited to commemorate Shift Chief Al Lerner's last shift with the Evanston Fire Department Wednesday morning.

From The City of Evanston: Shift Chief Al Lermer has announced his retirement from the Evanston Fire Department after 28 years of dedicated service. Since joining the EFD on March 12, 1990, Chief Lermer has served the City of Evanston and the department with honor and dedication. Community members are invited to join the department and Chief Lermer's crew for a flag lowering ceremony on Wednesday, May 2, 7:30 a.m., at Fire Station 1, 1332 Emerson St.

Chief Lermer began his career of public service with the U.S. Navy in 1984 and he built upon that dedication to serve others with an exemplary 28-year career with the EFD. Over that time, Chief Lermer served on a number of committees, performed as an underwater rescue diver, and trained new fire recruits at the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy.

"Chief Lermer has always been a dedicated firefighter, paramedic and fire officer who helped advance the department's mission, especially in the areas of training and EMS," said Fire Chief Brian Scott. "He will be missed."
