Evanston Runners Conquer First Chicago Marathon Since Pandemic

CHICAGO — It may have been a long wait, but for the participants in the 43rd edition of the Chicago Marathon, it was worth it. Taking place for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sunday's race was filled with local participants.

There were 107 runners from Evanston out of the approximately 26,000 that finished the marathon, according to unofficial results.

Seifu Tura, of Ethiopia, won the men's race with a time of 2:06:12 seconds, while and Ruth Chepngetich, of Kenya, took the women's crown after finishing in 2:22:31.

The men's and women's wheelchair races were won by Daniel Romanchuk and Tatyana McFadden, both of the United States, in 1:29:07 and 1:48:57.

Evanston runners included local octogenarian Jerry Lilidahl, who finished in first place among all runners in his age group. According to unofficial results, a dozen men and women aged 80 and older registered for the race and three completed it. Local attorney and ETHS chess club coach Keith Holzmueller finished 2nd among those aged 65 to 69.

The top 10 Evanston runners, in order of their finishing position within their gender, were the following:

• Kyler Hu, 2:51:39, 95th in the 25-29 age group, 309th among men, 356th overall
• Sharon Hermes, 3:32:09, 84th in the 40-44 age group, 611st among women, 3,007th overall
• Reuben Keller, 2:59:45, 83rd in the 40-44 age group, 612nd among men, 698th overall
• Jose Salas, 3:06:37, 196th in the 25-29 age group, 854th among men, 994th overall
• Sam Lang, 3:09:24, 152nd in the 40-44 age group, 963rd among men, 1,1131st overall
• Jen Strickland, 3:49:07, 186th in the 40-44 age group, 1,288th among women, 4,992nd overall
• Sean Patton, 3:19:40, 275th in the 40-44 age group, 1,556th among men, 1,866th overall
• Keith Holzmueller, 3:22:19, 2nd in the 65-69 age group, 1,702nd among men, 2,055th overall
• Anthony Chukumba, 3:23:50, 85th in the 50-54 age group, 1,794th among men, 2,128th overall
• Paul Lang, 3:24:15, 349th in the 35-39 age group, 1,824th among men, 2,223rd overall

Participants in this year's race were required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of attending the event
