Evanston Township High School Ranked No. 41 In Illinois

ETHS retained its spot on this year's U.S. News and World Report rankings of public high schools.

EVANSTON, IL — Evanston Township High School was ranked the 41st top high school in Illinois and No. 955 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, halting several years of declining state rankings.

The approximately 3,700-student high school has an Advanced Placement participation rate of 63 percent, with 48 percent of students passing at least one AP exam, according to U.S. News.

Mathematics proficiency is 50 percent, reading proficiency is 53 percent and the ETHS graduation rate is 93 percent, which U.S. News classified as "somewhat above state median."

According to U.S. News, the rankings aim to compare how well public schools prepare students for college-level work and teach students basic skills.

Evanston Township High School's No. 41 ranking in Illinois this year is identical to the school's in-state ranking from 2020, when it was also 827th in the nation.

Back in 2020, ETHS was ranked No. 28 in the state, and in 2019, it was ranked No. 27. Seven years ago, the school ranked 13th in Illinois.

The 2022 rankings used data from the 2019-20 school year, which was adjusted to compensate for the effects of COVID-19, according to U.S. News.

Most schools closed before state testing in the spring of 2020, and federal education officials granted a waiver to skip testing that year, so U.S. News used assessment data from the prior three years.

In Illinois, the top five schools in the rankings were selective enrollment high schools in Chicago Public Schools, with the No. 6 school a selective enrollment suburban school — Proviso Math and Science Academy.

Among suburban public high schools that accept all residents, Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire was top-ranked, followed by Vernon Hills High School, Hinsdale Central High School, New Trier Township High School and Lake Forest High School.

Among other North Shore public schools, Deerfield High School ranked No. 14 in the state, Glenbrook South ranked No. 18 and Glenbrook North was 20th.

“The consistent ranking of ETHS among the top three percent of high schools in the state and in the country is a credit to our dedicated teachers and staff,” ETHS Superintendent Eric Witherspoon said in a statement. “Even with the impact of a global pandemic and the challenges to the academic, social and emotional wellbeing of students, ETHS is committed to preparing students for career, college, and life. As a comprehensive public high school that welcomes all students in our community, we are incredibly proud.”
