Flash Flood Warning Extended For North Suburbs

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning across northern Cook County Wednesday.

EVANSTON, IL — The National Weather Service extended a flash flood warning for northern Cook County suburbs until Thursday morning. So far, Lake County — where some officials have warned of a 100-year storm — has been hit hardest from overnight storms.

There were no immediate reports of road closures or major flooding in Winnetka, or Skokie. Wilmette public works officials reported just a half dozen calls for street flooding, which have all been resolved. Evanston police reported a few downed trees with no serious damage. But weather officials urged residents to prioritize safety. Lake Cook Road in Northbrook was reported closed due to flooding from Waukegan Road to Skokie Boulevard due to street flooding.

"Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles," the National Weather Service said.

Wednesday afternoon, temperatures are projected to rise above 90 degrees. Additional thunderstorms are expected to develop across northern Illinois into northwest Indiana tonight as a cold front approaches the area. Storms will be capable of producing large hail, damaging gusts of winds and very heavy rainfall that could result in additional flash flooding, the NWS advised.

Despite earlier disruptions, Metra said it is resuming its normal weekday schedule, although trains may be delayed around 15 minutes.
