Has the Nursing Home that you or a Loved One Stays Passed Inspection?

State inspections in a nursing home are pertinent to the well-being of you or a loved one who is staying in a nursing home. Nursing homes who receive Medicare or Medicaid services (CMS) require the State to perform an inspection to make sure that the homes receiving money are up to standard. These inspections are done on average about once a year.

During State inspections, the quality of the nursing home is closely looked at. The inspection team, usually a registered nursing another other trained inspectors, observe resident care, the relationship between staff and residents, and the environment. Often, the inspectors also interview both residents and staff about their life in the nursing home. The inspector team usually reviews clinical records to check for proper assessments and charting.

A nursing home resident and their family have the right to see past inspections to make sure that inspections passed. If they have not passed, it is important to address what the nursing home will be doing to improve the facility. If a nursing home does not meet inspection, they are required to address the issues promptly or the facility can lose their license.
