Kittens Rescued From Burning Evanston Apartment Building

All residents were able to return home to the two-flat building with minimal smoke damage Sunday night.

EVANSTON, IL — Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire Sunday night and rescued two kittens from a home in south Evanston. Fire companies were called to a two-flat apartment building at 10:07 p.m. for a report of a structure fire. The first arriving companies found heavy smoke coming from the back of the building and smoke stains around the entrance to the basement, according to Division Chief Paul Polep of the Evanston Fire Department.

Everyone who lived in the apartments was already outside the home by the time the fire department arrived. Crews forced their way in, discovering a "small contents fire" in one of the rooms, Polep said. After extinguishing the fire, firefighters ventilated the building.

Two kittens "in good condition" were found by fire crews after primary searches were completed, according to Polep.
