Labor Day 2017: What's Open, What's Closed In Evanston

Plus, some fun things to do in Chicagoland during the long weekend.

EVANSTON, IL — The dog days of summer are winding down, and we get one last weekend before the school year and fall activities get into full swing. Labor Day 2017 is Monday, Sept. 4. And while it's a day of rest and relaxation for many, it's also a federal holiday, meaning many local services and offices will be closed.

Here's a roundup of what's closed and what'll be open in Evanston, plus a look at some fun events happening in Chicagoland.

Closed

  • Municipal offices (Civic Center closed Sept. 2-4)
  • Evanston Public Libraries (Sept. 3-4)
  • Banks
  • Schools
  • The Chandler-Newberger Center and Ecology Center (Sept. 2-4)
  • The Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center (Sept. 3-4)
  • The Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center, Noyes Cultural Arts Center, Levy Senior Center, and Robert Crown Center will all be closed Sept. 4.

Open

Most big-box retailers will be open — and many are offering Labor Day deals — but smaller businesses and mom and pop stores might be closed, so it's a good idea to call ahead.

Beaches

All five of Evanston's public swimming beaches will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 2-4.

Parking

No street cleaning will occur on Sept 4 and street cleaning parking restrictions will not be in effect.

Trash pickup

There will be no refuse or recycling collection in Evanston Monday. The Labor Day refuse and recycling collection schedules will push each day's collection back one day, such that Monday collection will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday collection on Wednesday, while Thursday and Friday collections will remain unchanged.
