Loyola Student, 19, Expected to Recover Following Shooting: Family

The woman was the unintended target and was shot by someone in a passing vehicle in Rogers Park Friday night.

A 19-year-old Loyola University student who was critically injured after being shot Friday night while walking with friends in Rogers Park is expected to recover, family members told the Chicago Tribune. The woman’s mom said Sunday that her daughter should be able to leave the hospital in about a week.

The woman was shot in the back while walking with friends to a store in the 6700 block of North Clark, which is near the university’s north campus, around 9:15 p.m. on Friday, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting. Chicago Police believe the woman was the unintended target and the shots were fired from a passing vehicle, according to an update shared with Loyola University students on Sunday.

The woman, who was initially taken to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston in critical condition, remained in the intensive care unit Sunday morning but her condition had stabilized, spokesman Jim O’Connell told the Chicago Tribune.

Witnesses report seeing a gray-colored Nissan Altima flee the scene of the shooting. No information on a possible offender was available as of Sunday morning, according to university officials.

“Please keep this student, and her family, in your thoughts and prayers,” Jane Neufeld, Loyola University vice president for student development, said in the Sunday update on the school’s website.
