Loyola University Law Professor Dies

Michael J. Zimmer - who specialized in employment discrimination law - was a resident of Evanston.

Michael J. Zimmer, 72, of Evanston, Illinois, Professor of Law at Loyola University Chicago, died Wednesday, September 23, 2015. Born in 1942, he was the son of the late Theodore and Marion Zimmer of Milwaukee.

A widely recognized scholar in the areas of employment discrimination law, labor and employment law and constitutional law, Professor Zimmer was co-author of the leading employment discrimination casebook as well as co-author of the first casebook on international and comparative employment law. He also published many articles in leading law journals and lectured across the United States and internationally.

Professor Zimmer received his A.B. and J.D. from Marquette University, where he was Editor in Chief of the Marquette Law Review. He also held an LL.M from Columbia University, where he was named a James Kent Fellow. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable Thomas E. Fairchild of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and then served as an associate at Foley & Lardner in Milwaukee.

He began his law school teaching career at the University of South Carolina in 1971 and taught at a number of law schools, most recently as Professor of Law at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He taught at the Seton Hall University School of Law from 1978 to 2008 and served as Associate Dean there from 1990 to 1994.

Among his honors, Professor Zimmer delivered the 24th Fairchild Lecture at the University of Wisconsin law school and was the Recipient of the First Annual Paul S. Miller Award for Contributions to Labor and Employment Law.

Professor Zimmer is survived by his wife, Margaret L. Moses, also a professor at Loyola Chicago School of Law; his son, Michael Zimmer, a writer and filmmaker in Los Angeles; his daughter, Lanier Zimmer, a Henry Luce Scholar in Myanmar; his brother Ted Zimmer, sister-in-law Jolie Zimmer, and brother-in-law Al Moses; and by his nieces and nephews Sara Zimmer (Pietro Giassi), Tom (Laura) Moses, Ann (Tommy) Middleton, Joe (Christina) Zimmer, Eric (Elizabeth) Zimmer, and Patrick Zimmer.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday October 11, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Michigan Shores Club, 911 Michigan Avenue, Wilmette, IL 60091
