New Evanston Dog Beach in the Works

EVANSTON, IL - Dog lovers in Evanston may have the chance to take their furry pals to the beach this summer after all.

While erosion was cited as the reason for the closure of the city’s Dog Beach north of Church Street, city officials believe they have found a work around.

“We have used the sand dredged out of the Church St. Boat Ramp to build a new Dog Beach on the south side of the boat ramp,” the city announced in a statement Tuesday.

The new area for dogs, which will be about 90 feet long by 12 to 20 feet wide according to Evanston Now, is targeted for a Memorial Day weekend opening. The Dog Beach season will run through Nov. 20, with a year-long pass set to cost $50 for Evanstonians and $100 for others.

The area will be fenced off so dogs won’t be able to float over to the Greenwood Street beach to the south.

Residents who have already purchased a Dog Beach pass will be refunded for the difference in cost. Those who do not wish to use the new area can get a full refund, but must let the city know before Saturday, May 28.

The city made it clear this entire plan is temporary, and could wash away without a moment’s notice.

“We want to emphasize this is a temporary solution and mother nature could wash away this location just as it has the original dog beach.”
