North Shore Country Day School Participates In Race Against Hate
Members of the NCDS community took part in every portion of the Evanston event on Father's Day.

EVANSTON, IL — The Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate has been a cherished community event in Evanston for the past 15 Father's Days. The event brings together thousands of people to run and walk against racial hatred and violence. Everyone is welcome, from leisurely walkers to competitive 10K runners.
The North Shore Country Day School Team was organized by Michelle Kavoosi, a new North Shore parent, and recent alum Tommy McHugh (Class of ’17, pictured below) won the 2017 edition of the 10K race. Plus, more than 85 members of the school community showed up on race day to support each other and reach the Bronze Sponsorship goal of pledging to raise $500 for racial justice and violence prevention.
Families, friends, faculty and staff of the school have been participating in the race for 10 years and NSCDS has been a proud race sponsor for more than half of that time. The local event gives the school’s families, new and old, an opportunity to participate within the community.

The Race Against Hate is a NSCDS Parents’ Association Multicultural Affairs Committee tradition. The NSCDS team arrived early in the morning to set up the signature purple tent, snacks, a hydration station and purple bandanas to hand out for all runners affiliated with the school. There were team members in every event, from the youth mile to the 10K run. NSCDS parents Lisa Altenbernd and Steve Hagerty hosted a post-race brunch, serving up frittatas and fruit while welcoming Race participants from the School into their home on Father’s Day.
The funds raised by NSCDS and all the race proceeds support YWCA racial justice and violence prevention programs while honoring the legacy of Ricky Byrdsong, former Northwestern University Men's Basketball Coach who was killed in 1999 by a white supremacist. The programs assist children and teenagers in local schools and youth organizations to establish healthy, violence-free relationships and join the constructive conversation of racial justice.
