NU Grad Student Robbed, Sexually Assaulted In Evanston Elevator

The 24-year-old Northwestern student was attacked in her apartment building Tuesday night.

EVANSTON, IL — A Northwestern University student was sexually assaulted and robbed in the elevator of her apartment building Tuesday night, police said.

Evanston police said they were dispatched around 9:37 p.m. to an apartment complex on the 1900 block of Ridge Road for a report of an attempted sexual assault of a 24-year-old Northwestern graduate student.

The victim saw her attacker knocking on the entrance door to her building and let him in, thinking he was a fellow resident, according to police.

When they got in the building's elevator together, the man began groping the woman and tried to reach under her clothes. She began to scream for help, at which point the man hit her and threw her to the elevator's floor, police said.

The man stole the student's wallet and cell phone and fled when the door opened. She sustained scrapes to her knees but declined additional medical attention, according to a statement from Evanston police.

The attacker was described as a 25 to 30-year-old black man, between six foot and six foot, four inches tall, weighting between 190 and 230 pounds. He was wearing a long-sleeved dark shirt, dark pants and a black backpack, police said.
