📰 News we're reading

1. Construction Starts For Hilda's Place At Lake Street Church: Report (patch.com) — Evanston residents will see a major expansion of local homelessness services as construction begins to restore Hilda's Place at Lake Street Church into a 30-bed, year-round overnight shelter by spring 2027. Backed by more than $6.5 million in grants and local support, the project will shift daytime services upstairs during renovations while preparing to again host overnight guests in a fully updated basement space.

2. Evanston Fire Captain Matt Grizely To Retire After 34 Years Of Service (patch.com) — Evanston neighbors are saying goodbye to Fire Captain Matt Grizely, who is retiring after more than 34 years of service to the city. Known for his leadership as captain, acting battalion chief, paramedic trainer and EMS coordinator, his work in fire prevention, training and community safety will leave a lasting impact on the Evanston Fire Department.

3. Flock, after misuse, says its changing policy (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston has already removed its Flock license plate cameras, but the company is now tightening rules nationwide after high-profile misuse and criticism from communities like ours. The story explains why Evanston canceled its contract, what new safeguards Flock is promising, and how nearby towns' cameras near our borders could still affect local drivers' privacy.

4. Healthy building warnings coming (evanstonnow.com) — More than 150 large Evanston buildings are behind on required energy and water benchmarking reports, and the city will start posting warning notices this week. Under the Healthy Buildings Ordinance, owners face higher fines starting in 2027 if they remain noncompliant, as Evanston pushes toward long-term efficiency and emissions goals for its biggest properties.

5. City to seek legal advice from county in responding to ICE activity (dailynorthwestern.com) — Evanston officials are asking Cook County prosecutors whether federal immigration agents involved in last Halloween's detentions here can face criminal charges.
