Referendum Possible for District 65 Voters in 2017
Superintendent of Evanston and Skokie schools indicates urgency in having measure of the ballot in April.

EVANSTON/SKOKIE, IL - Talk has begun about the possibility of placing a $13.5 million referendum on the ballot for voters in the Evanston/Skokie District 65 school district for the April 2017 election.
District Superintendent Paul Goren spoke multiple times this week about the possibility, according to coverage from Evanston Now.
Goren called “structural deficits” facing the district as reason for the urgency in placing a measure that would add $438 a year on the property tax bill for owners of the average home.

The current school year’s budget is balanced, but with no new sources of revenue, a deficit could rise to $20 million by 2024, he said.
The result could be increased class sizes, the elimination of student activities and school closures.

The deadline for the board of education to place a referendum on the ballot for April is Jan. 19.
