Tax Info Sent to City Employees in Unsealed Envelopes

Mail room malfunction leads to city sending personal information in unsealed carriers.

EVANSTON, IL - Some city employees received letters with tax information containing personal information last month in letters that were either partially-sealed or unsealed, the Evanston Review reports.

Timothy Schoolmaster, a former Evanston police officer, said a 1095c form was sent to his former address with the wrong ZIP code. His Social Security number was fully visible through the plastic window of the envelope.

The same thing happened to several employees of the city and former employees who still receive health insurance through the city.

City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz said the problem arose from a malfunction of a mail room device. He encouraged the use of an electronic option offered by the city as a way to avoid problems like this in the future.

It’s unclear how many were affected by the unintentional breach, but the city is addressing the issue on an individual basis.
