Tutor Describes How He Saved Woman’s Life on Evanston Pier

Alex Adolphson was having an average Saturday before he was called into action near the Church Street boat ramp.

EVANSTON, IL - Alex Adolphson, a tutor who moved to Evanston just this year, was walking his dog along the lakefront last weekend when he was called on to save someone’s life.

And that’s just what he did.

The Evanston Review tells Adolphson’s story, from when he was approached by a distressed lakefront visitor asking him if he knew how to swim to jumping the the water to pull a woman to safety and giving her CPR.

"I could see a woman floating in the water next to the dock," Adolphson said. "The water was about five feet, it came up to my neck. My feet were barely touching the ground.

"I knew I had to get her out of the water. I'd never done a water rescue or performed CPR… I was surprised at how heavy she was. When I got her onto the cement, I could tell she was unconscious. She wasn't breathing and was blue in the face."
