UPS Driver Who Hit Pedestrian Suspended

Driver will be out of work until company completes its investigation.

The UPS driver who struck and injured an Evanston woman Monday night near Central Street and Ashland Avenue has been suspended pending the outcome of an internal company investigation, a UPS spokeswoman told the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday.

Authorities on Monday said the woman was stuck underneath the truck before being rescued by Evanston firefighters and taken to NorthShore Evanston Hospital, where she was suffering from numerous life-threatening injuries. As of late Monday night, her condition was critical.

According to the Evanston Police Department, the woman was walking across Ashland when the UPS truck had turned southbound onto the street and struck her.

While streets in the area were closed for two hours after the crash, UPS was able to send a replacement driver, who finished Monday’s route and will be on until the company’s investigation is completed.

“Police released the packages in the vehicle,” UPS Spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg told the Tribune. “We were able to complete the deliveries for that route. Another driver is on that route, and we (are providing service) in the area today (Tuesday).”
