Woman Sues Bar After Falling Down Stairs

Stairwell was poorly lit and handrail not functioning at Bringer Inn in Morton Grove, according to suit.

A woman who fell on a stairway while exiting a Morton Grove bar is suing the establishment and its owners for not having a functioning handrail, among other claims.

Lauretta Burke was exiting the Bringer Inn at 6230 Lincoln Ave. on a rear or side stairway on March 15, 2013 when she fell.

She seeks more than $50,000 in damages, plus attorney fees and costs - according to the Cook County Record - in a suit filed March 11 in Cook County Circuit Court against Bringer Inn, at 6230 Lincoln Ave.

The suit alleges the defendants “failed to provide a landing on each side of the threshold that conformed to building code, neglected to install a functional handrail, did not properly illuminate the stairwell or warn patrons of the hazardous condition of the change in vertical elevation beyond the the door’s exterior.”

The failure to inspect and repair the area, Burke claims, led to pain and suffering in addition to medical expenses.
