Cop Who Stole Money from a Dead Man Ruined His Career

William Christie scheduled to be sentenced next month.

A 27-year veteran police officer stole hundreds of dollars from a dead man at the Niles YMCA, a crime that cost him his job. In April, he’ll face punishment.

William Christie, 53, was convicted earlier this week on charges related to his 2009 theft of $1,700 in cash, including more than $500 in coins, from a cardboard box in the room at the Leaning Tower YMCA in Niles.

Christie was originally called to the facility in response to a call that a man residing there had died, the Chicago Tribune reports.

“After Christie arrived at the facility, he sealed off the room and told staff at the YMCA that no one was permitted to enter the room. Over the course of several days, Christie tried to re-enter the room several times, raising the suspicions of the staff who then contacted the Niles Police Department,” according to the Tribune report.

Surveillance equipment was used to record Christie of the theft.
