Yellowbrick to Host Conference on the Power of Shame

Mental health professionals are invited to a half-day conference on the power of shame at Yellowbrick's headquarters in Evanston on Dec. 9.

EVANSTON, Ill.—Yellowbrick, a psychiatric healthcare facility geared specifically to young adults, is co-sponsoring a conference for mental health professionals with the Menninger Clinic — a nationally acclaimed psychiatric hospital based in Houston, TX — on Dec. 9.

Now in its 10th year, the half-day event will be held at Yellowbrick’s headquarters at One Rotary Center, 1560 Sherman Ave., in Evanston.

Entitled “Shame Resilience: Hiding in Plain Sight,” the conference will feature two guest speakers as well as a panel discussion and dialogue about how shame plays a powerful role in people’s views of themselves, how it contributes to addictions and self-destructive behaviors, and how therapists can help their patients deal more effectively with shame.

“Many young adults struggle regarding self-worth, and these struggles are often associated with experiences of shame. Shame is the painful experience of exposed defect or badness of the self. It can powerfully contribute to avoidance, isolation, emotional hiding and contributes to the processes involved in depression, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders, and at times suicide. And since feeling shame promotes hiding, it is not always recognizable in social or therapeutic contexts,” said Dr. Jesse Viner, CEO and Chief Medical Officer at Yellowbrick. “This conference will assist professionals to better identify shame and also give them tools to respond with empathy towards their patients.”

Cynthia Mulder, LCSW, Director of the Education and Training at the Menninger Clinic, will give a talk entitled “How Speaking About Shame Helps Build Resilience and Recovery.” Dr. Bryn Jessup, Director of Family Services at Yellowbrick, will present a talk entitled “Hiding in Plain Sight: Working with Shame in the Treatment of Emerging Adults.”
